Fieldtrip to the Lea Valley February 2021

Spring 1 update

Aspen had a fantastic Spring 1 half term, culminating with our Geography field trip to the Lea Valley. In Maths we developed our multiplication and division skills. In English we enjoyed learning about the awful habit of 'Ulf the Finger Eater' and wrote an alternative chapter for the book.  We also wrote very imaginative 'Magic Box' poetry. Aspen enjoyed investigating different types of rocks in Science. In Geography we investigated Land Use and in Art we looked at the work of modern abstract artist Rosemary Pierce and created some of our own abstract art using cubes and circles. We also practised colour mixing and painting.  Mrs Greathead led our postponed DT cooking session and Aspen created delicious pizzas from scratch, making the dough and the fresh tomato sauce. Well done everyone for all your hard work, effort and achievement this half term.

Autumn 2 update

Aspen have enjoyed another busy half term. In Maths we learnt column addition and subtraction and developed our understanding of multiplication and division. In English we enjoyed units based on 'Mini Rabbit Not Lost' and 'The True Story of the Three Little Pigs'.  We learnt about friction and magnetism in Science. Our activities included testing the best surface for cars to go down a ramp, making a compass and designing and creating a magnetic game. We had lots of fun learning about the Ancient Egyptians culminating in our exciting Wow Day. In Music, we learnt how to play the notes B, A and G on the recorder (sometimes in tune!). In PE we enjoyed cricket coaching from Chance to Shine Cricket, developed our stamina in fitness activities,  created an Egyptian pyramid building dance and took part in team building and parachute games. Our DT pizza making has had to be postponed but will take place in January. Many of Aspen Class were part of Mrs Greathead's Christmas Choir and performed brilliantly at the Christmas Fete, in assemblies and for shoppers in Hoddesdon. During this half term we welcomed two new members of the class, who soon settled in thanks to the friendliness and kindness of the Aspen children. We sadly said goodbye to one classmate just before the October half term holiday and we all wish him well  in his new school.  Well done everyone for a brilliant first term in the Juniors! See you in 2022!

Ancient Egyptian Wow day!

Aspen had a fantastic time on our Egyptian Wow day. The children looked amazing in their costumes. We learnt about the mummification process (including wrapping up each other in 'linen strips'), created 3d pyramids and designed collars. We made clay cartouches with hieroglyphics. We enjoyed a fashion show and learnt a song about Tutankhamun.

Welcome to Aspen Class!

The children have made a brilliant start to Year 3 and the juniors. This half term we have had great fun, exciting experiences and lots of fantastic learning!  In English this term we have enjoyed reading and writing the story of 'The Paper Bag Princess'. We have enjoyed reading 'Dr Xargle's Book of Earth Hounds' and we are currently writing non-chronological reports about alien pets. We have really enjoyed creating our own alien creatures! Our Maths learning has been place value and addition and subtraction. In our Science topic 'Animals including Humans', we have learnt all about food groups and skeletons. A highlight was looking at and touching real animal bones. We also met Mr Bones, our friendly school skeleton!

Aspen have loved the Geography topic, 'Extreme Earth'. We had an amazing Wow Day when we arrived to find that the classroom had been hit been an earthquake! We created TV news reports, took part in a volcano dance and we used tissue paper and PVA glue to make volcano pictures in the style of artist Margaret Godfrey. The children also learnt how to use a compass and used them to complete challenges outside. We really enjoyed erupting the fantastic volcanoes the children made at home.

During our busy half term we have taken part in a dance workshop where the children learnt a dance to 1960s classic 'Hippy, Hippy Shake'. We have enjoyed music together as a year group, practising a group performance of the song 'Let Your Spirit Fly'. We are looking forward to finishing the half term with Halloween dress up day and the athlete visit- a massive well done for raising so much sponsor money!

Thank you to all Aspen families for your ongoing support with reading and home learning.
