Geography

At Brookland Junior School we aim for all pupils to became confident and inquisitive geographers. Geography is a brilliant way of developing children’s natural fascination for the world around them. We want to inspire pupils’ curiosity, and fascination about the world and its people, that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

 

Our Geography curriculum develops skills and knowledge, through a hands-on learning approach which develops life-long skills. We understand the great value of fieldwork to inspire and motivate children.

 

Geography is taught as a standalone subject, matched to the National Curriculum and carefully planned to show progression across the whole school. The skills developed include: Locational Knowledge, Place Knowledge, Human and Physical Geography, and Mapping and Fieldwork skills.

 

We have Knowledge Organisers for each topic for your child, which will be available on the website. They contain key facts and information that children need, to have a basic knowledge and understanding of each topic, and give them a clear ‘bigger picture’ of their learning.

 

Geography is taught over three half terms during the academic year. SEND is supported through differentiated work and through extension of learning in lessons. Throughout our geography units, your child will have the opportunity to show off their English skills in an extended piece of writing, where appropriate. This will allow your child the chance to write in different genres and understand how to transfer their writing skills across the curriculum.
