Hints for reading with your child

Try to put time aside to read with your child, somewhere that is quiet and away from distractions.

Make sure they understand the vocabulary.  Decoding the words is very different to understanding them.  Of course they can ask for help, or use a dictionary, but it is good to try to read around the word and try to work out what it means from the context of the text.

Some possible questions you could ask :

What has happened so far?

How does this character feel?  Why?

Can you predict what might happen next?

Where is the story set?

What problem has occured in the story?  How was it solved?

Can you think of a synoym (different word that means the same) for this word?
