Formal and informal methods.

 

The grid method is an 'informal method'. It uses the idea of visualising an array by regrouping each number into its place value and multiplying the digits separately- then regrouping them together for the outcome. This is used as a step towards using a formal written method. See video 1 below.

 

Formal written method uses the idea of multiplying each digit in each number and writing down the product in one compact grid. See video 2 below. 

 

Choose which method suits you best for now and complete the activity for that method. You do not need to complete both tasks.
