"Music has a power of forming the character and should therefore be introduced into the education of the young." Aristotle
"Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, and life to everything… Without music, life would be an error." Plato
At Brookland Junior School, we use the Charanga scheme of work as a basis to delivering a progressive and immersive music curriculum.
Children follow a pattern of study based around a particular style of music, that begins with listen and respond activities, followed by vocals and culminates in using tuned instruments to learn the melody.
Children are exposed to musical notation from Year 3 and gradually develop their music reading skills as they move through the school.
Years 5 & 6 Choir - This club runs every Thursday, 3:15pm - 4:15pm from September to February. The choir performs at Young Voices every year and sings in the local community at Christmas time. It is a very busy club and open to everyone, regardless of apparent ability. The club is free to attend. However, participation in the Young Voices events has associated costs (transport, costumes and tickets).
Violin and Piano lessons
These weekly 1:1 lessons are run by specialist music teachers and there is currently a waiting list for both violin and piano. Please see the office for details on cost and availability.
Each week, all children attend singing assembly (Monday - Years 3 & 4, Tuesday - Years 5 & 6.
This year,we are using singing assembly to explore the history of music and how certain periods can be defined by a particular style of music:
Autumn 1 - 60s. Spring 1 - 80s Summer 1 - 00s
Autumn 2 - 70s Spring 2 - 90s Summer 2 - 10s
Music and Mince Pies
Well done to the children who performed in today's Music and Mince Pies afternoon. We have 30 children who currently play an instrument at Brookland and were so proud of their confidence and ability in today's concert.
What a marvellous display of our children's talent. As always, thank you parents for being so supportive and nurturing your child's love of music.
Music and Mince Pies
The Choir have had a very busy term indeed! As well as rehearsing the song list for Young Voices in February, we have also been here, there and everywhere warming the hearts of our community through the gift of song.
The Choir have been to The New Grange residential home, The Beaumont Day Centre and have sung for parents, carers and siblings outside of school.
Well done Choir! You now have a well earned rest until the new year. Choir will resume on Thursday 16th January 2020
