Reading is key. It is an invaluable tool for all children to have as it opens up the world to them. A good reader makes a good writer and the whole curriculum becomes easier to access. We support the children daily in the practice and improvement of reading through guided reading, shared reading, independent reading as well as adults reading to them where we model how a good reader should engage their listener. Although much is done at school, we ask that children read at home at least 5 times a week, and that this be recorded in their planners. We understand that as children get older, they may want to read alone, but we ask that an adult acknowledges this in the planner as well. Don't forget, this does not have to be their 'reading book', any book, newspaper, comic or even website that has required them to read could be written down.
