Lesson 4: Scrapyard Challenge
This week’s science learning outcome is to notice that magnetic forces can act at a distance and attract some materials and not others, by sorting materials. Children should use the PowerPoint to gather information on what magnets are, and how they work. Then, your child should imagine that they are in charge of a scrapyard like the one in the clip embedded within the PowerPoint. They have a big jumble of materials to sort out, and need to separate the magnetic materials from the non-magnetic materials. Using a fridge magnet, children should attract materials, and remove them from the pile. Any materials that are left in the pile are non-magnetic. Your child should record their findings on their Magnetic Materials Activity Sheet.
